Why Are Thanksgiving Flights 31% More Expensive in 2026?
Thanksgiving flights in 2026 average $402 for a domestic round trip, up 31% ($95) from about $307 last year, according to Hopper. The main driver is jet fuel: US Gulf Coast jet fuel was $3.72 a gallon in August 2026, 84% higher than a year earlier, after the Iran conflict. Official BLS data back this up, with airline fares up 22.4% year on year in September.

The short answer: the 31% is real, and fuel is the main reason
Yes, the headline holds up: Hopper's own index shows Thanksgiving 2026 domestic fares at $402, up 31%, and government data confirm a broad airfare surge. The CPI airline fares index is up 22.4% year on year, and jet fuel costs roughly 60% to 85% more than a year ago depending on the measure.
The 31% figure comes from Hopper's 2026 Holiday Travel Index, published on 25 September 2026 and widely reported by FOX local stations. We opened Hopper's release and confirmed the numbers: $402 for a domestic Thanksgiving round trip (up $95, or 31%) and $452 for Christmas (up $85, or 23%). Hopper calls both 10-year highs.
Independent data point the same way. The Bureau of Labor Statistics' consumer price index for airline fares was 22.4% higher in September 2026 than a year earlier, while overall inflation was 3.7%. American Airlines told investors on 22 October that it paid $3.85 a gallon for fuel in the third quarter, up from $2.37 a year earlier.
Our read: fuel is the biggest single cause, but not the only one. The collapse of Spirit Airlines in May removed a low-fare competitor, and carriers have found that many travellers keep paying. Hopper's number is also a specific measure (more on that below), so treat it as a strong signal rather than the exact price you will pay.
How much are Thanksgiving flights in 2026?
The average domestic Thanksgiving round trip is $402 in 2026, per Hopper, against about $307 in 2025. That is the highest Thanksgiving figure in Hopper's last four annual reports, which ranged from $268 to $307 between 2023 and 2025.
Hopper publishes a holiday outlook every autumn. Using the figures from its own releases, Thanksgiving fares fell in 2023, rose modestly in 2024 and 2025, then jumped in 2026. The 2025 figure is not printed on Hopper's 2026 page; it is implied by the stated $95 increase ($402 minus $95 = $307), which matches the baseline ConsumerAffairs reported from the same release.

Hotels tell a different story. Hopper says domestic Thanksgiving hotel rates are roughly flat at $170 a night. Christmas hotels are up 18% to $197 a night. So for Thanksgiving specifically, the price shock is in the air, not on the ground.

Is airfare inflation in 2026 confirmed by official data?
Yes. The BLS airline fares index hit 315.9 in September 2026, 22.4% above September 2025, after peaking at 329.8 in May. For comparison, headline CPI inflation was 3.7%, so airfares rose about six times faster than prices overall.
The CPI airline fares series (not seasonally adjusted) was fairly flat through 2024 and 2025, swinging between about 243 and 281 with the usual spring and holiday peaks. In 2026 it broke out of that range, climbing every month from January to May.

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics, which tracks fares actually paid, shows the same shift with a lag. Its average domestic fare was $445 in Q2 2026, up 11.2% on Q2 2025 and up from $428 in Q1. BTS's Q3 2026 figure is not out yet; the next release is due around 8 January 2027.
How much have jet fuel prices risen in 2026?
US Gulf Coast jet fuel averaged $3.724 a gallon in August 2026, up 84% from $2.024 a year earlier. Prices jumped 63% in a single month, from $2.26 in February to $3.70 in March, after the conflict with Iran pushed Brent crude above $100.
Jet fuel spent 2024 and 2025 in a calm band of roughly $1.93 to $2.68 a gallon. Then it spiked. The Energy Information Administration's spot series peaked at $3.943 in May 2026, dipped to $3.04 in June, and climbed back to $3.72 by August.

Crude oil is the root. EIA's October Short-Term Energy Outlook says Brent averaged $114 a barrel in September 2026, and it forecasts $105 for Q4 2026 and $84 for 2027. EIA's wholesale jet fuel forecast is $3.88 a gallon for Q4 2026 (forecast).
Airlines are paying even more than the spot price suggests. American Airlines expects to pay about $4.70 a gallon in Q4 2026, which it described as nearly double the fourth quarter of 2025.
Why are flights so expensive in 2026? Fuel, fewer low-cost seats, and steady demand
Fuel now makes up more than 31% of airline operating costs worldwide in 2026, up from about 25% in 2025, according to IATA. On top of that, Spirit Airlines shut down on 2 May 2026, and demand from higher-income travellers has held up.
- Fuel is a bigger share of every ticket IATA expects the global airline fuel bill to reach about $350 billion in 2026, up from $252 billion in 2025. At American Airlines, fuel rose from 20.4% of operating expenses in Q3 2025 to 28.6% in Q3 2026 (our calculation from its press release). US carriers spent about $6.5 billion on fuel in April 2026 alone, versus about $3.6 billion a year earlier.
- A low-fare competitor disappeared Spirit Airlines began an immediate wind-down on 2 May 2026, citing pressure that included Iran-driven fuel prices. It carried 3.9% of US passengers in February 2026 (Cirium data via NPR). Consumer advocates argue Spirit held down fares on routes it flew even with a small share, so its exit likely matters more on leisure routes to Florida and Las Vegas than its share suggests.
- Demand has bent, not broken TSA set its all-time daily record on the Sunday after Thanksgiving 2025, screening about 3,133,924 people. Meanwhile American's Q3 revenue rose 19.3% to a record $16.3 billion, a sign that many travellers are paying the higher prices.
- Airlines are passing costs on, not cutting capacity at home American flew 4.2% more seat-miles in Q3 2026 than a year earlier and plans 5.5% to 6.5% more in Q4. Its revenue per seat-mile rose 14.5%. In other words, US majors are mostly raising prices rather than shrinking schedules, although American says it will slow growth in 2027 because of fuel.
How much of your ticket is the fuel price increase?
Our estimate: about $31 of extra fuel cost per one-way passenger trip, or roughly $61 on a nonstop round trip, using American Airlines' Q3 2026 figures. That covers about two-thirds of Hopper's $95 Thanksgiving increase, suggesting fuel is the largest single driver but not the whole story.
American Airlines' Q3 2026 press release gives everything needed for a rough estimate: fuel bill, gallons burned, average price per gallon and passengers boarded. We isolate the price effect by asking what American would have paid if fuel had stayed at last year's price.
| Measure | Q3 2025 | Q3 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average fuel price per gallon | $2.37 | $3.85 | +62.7% |
| Fuel consumed | 1,169m gal | 1,204m gal | +3.0% |
| Aircraft fuel expense | $2,767m | $4,635m | +67.5% |
| Passengers enplaned | 58.47m | 58.14m | -0.6% |
| Fuel cost per enplaned passenger | $47.32 | $79.72 | +$32.40 |
| Extra cost from price alone (1,204m gal × $1.48) | $1,782m | ≈ $30.65 per passenger |
A nonstop round trip is two enplanements, so the fuel price increase adds about $61 per round-trip passenger on average (2 × $30.65). A connecting round trip counts four enplanements, but each leg is shorter, so the per-trip figure does not simply double.
What are the cheapest and most expensive days to fly for Thanksgiving 2026?
The cheapest day to depart is Monday 23 November at about $370, and the most expensive day to return is Sunday 29 November at about $604, per Hopper. Coming back on the Monday or Tuesday after Thanksgiving instead of Sunday cuts the average to about $350.
| Travel day | Date | Avg round-trip fare | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Depart Monday | 23 Nov | ≈ $370 | Cheapest departure, about $50 less than Wednesday |
| Depart Thanksgiving Day | 26 Nov | ≈ $371 | Almost as cheap as Monday |
| Depart Wednesday | 25 Nov | ≈ $420 (implied) | Hopper says Monday is about $50 cheaper |
| Return Black Friday | 27 Nov | ≈ $420 | Cheaper than Sunday |
| Return Sunday | 29 Nov | ≈ $604 | Most expensive day of the holiday |
| Return Monday or Tuesday after | 30 Nov – 1 Dec | ≈ $350 | Saves up to $250 vs Sunday |
The FOX headline version of this, 'fly on Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday or Cyber Monday', is broadly right but simplifies Hopper's data. Thanksgiving Day departures are cheap ($371), Black Friday returns are mid-priced ($420), and the Monday after Thanksgiving (Cyber Monday, 30 November) is one of the cheapest return days. But the cheapest departure in Hopper's data is actually the Monday before, 23 November.
Christmas follows a similar pattern. Hopper says departing the weekend of 18 to 20 December costs just under $500, while the Monday or Tuesday before Christmas is about $440. Returning after 2 January costs over $560.
When should you book Thanksgiving flights for 2026?
Google Flights' five-year data put the lowest Thanksgiving prices about 34 days before departure, within a 21–57 day window. For a 25 November departure, 34 days out is 22 October, so as of 23 October 2026 the sweet spot is now, and Hopper advises booking before Halloween.
Google's 5 October 2026 analysis of five years of US Google Flights data found the cheapest Thanksgiving fares around 34 days ahead, with low prices typically available 21 to 57 days before departure. For Christmas, the low point is about 56 days out (33 to 67 days). That puts the end of the cheap Thanksgiving window around 4 November for a Wednesday 25 November departure (our date arithmetic).
Hopper's advice lines up: book flights and hotels before Halloween (31 October), since it expects prices to rise as the dates approach. Hopper notes one exception: big-city hotel rates can fall in the final 24 to 48 hours before a holiday.
What does not matter much: the day you book. Google found Wednesday is the cheapest day to buy, but only about 1.4% cheaper than Sunday, which it called negligible. The day you fly matters far more: Google says flying Monday and returning Tuesday or Wednesday saves about 14% versus weekend flights, and nonstop tickets cost about 20% more than connections.
How much more will a family of four pay for Thanksgiving flights?
A family of four flying at Hopper's average will pay $1,608 in 2026, about $380 more than the $1,228 it would have paid in 2025. Switching the return from Sunday to Monday or Tuesday can save up to $1,000 for the same family, which more than cancels out the year-on-year increase.
| Scenario | Fare per person | Family of four | vs 2025 average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 average (implied) | $307 | $1,228 | baseline |
| 2026 average | $402 | $1,608 | +$380 |
| 2026, return Sunday 29 Nov | $604 | $2,416 | +$1,188 |
| 2026, return Mon/Tue after | ≈ $350 | ≈ $1,400 | +$172 |
| 2026 Christmas average | $452 | $1,808 | +$340 vs Christmas 2025 ($367) |
The math is simple: 4 × ($402 − $307) = $380. The bigger lever is the calendar. Hopper's Sunday-return average is about $604, while Monday or Tuesday returns average about $350, a gap of roughly $250 per ticket, or up to $1,000 for four people.
How can you save on Thanksgiving flights in 2026?
The single biggest saving is avoiding a Sunday 29 November return, worth up to $250 per ticket on Hopper's numbers. After that, book in the next one to two weeks, compare connecting flights and set price alerts.
- 1Move your return off Sunday
Return Monday 30 November or Tuesday 1 December (about $350 average) instead of Sunday 29 November (about $604). If you must come back at the weekend, Black Friday is about $420.
- 2Depart early in the week or on the day
Monday 23 November (about $370) or Thanksgiving Day itself (about $371) beat the Tuesday–Wednesday rush.
- 3Book by early November
Google's data put the cheapest window 21 to 57 days before departure. For a 25 November trip, that runs out around 4 November. Hopper says book before 31 October.
- 4Check connecting flights
Google found nonstop flights average about 20% more than connections. On a $402 ticket, that is a meaningful difference if you can live with a layover.
- 5Set alerts and watch for drops
Use price tracking on Google Flights, Hopper or Kayak. With fuel forecast to ease in 2027 (EIA forecast), short-term fare dips are possible, but there is no sign fares will fall back to 2025 levels before Thanksgiving.
- 6Consider driving or a closer airport
For trips under about five hours, driving can beat four airfares. Secondary airports sometimes price lower; compare all airports within reach.
Are Canadian and UK travellers seeing the same price spike?
Canadian return trips from the US by air rose 11.6% year on year in September 2026, but were still 18.7% below September 2024, per Statistics Canada. Air Canada has cut or delayed eight US routes for this fall and winter, citing fuel costs and demand.
Canada's Thanksgiving was on 12 October, so the US holiday mainly affects Canadians visiting family or shopping south of the border. The picture is mixed. StatCan's preliminary data show Canadian-resident return trips from the US by air up 11.6% in September 2026 versus 2025, but down 18.7% versus 2024; car trips were up 5.6% but down 31.1% from 2024. Full counts are due 23 November.
Supply is shrinking too. In July, Air Canada said it would cancel three Toronto and Montreal routes to the US Midwest, delay three Florida routes from October to December, and not restore its Montreal and Toronto flights to New York JFK this winter. The airline and reporting at the time linked the cuts to high fuel costs and softer demand.
For UK and European travellers, Hopper says Christmas fares to Europe are up 15% and fares to Mexico and Central America are up 23%. Long-haul fares to Africa, Asia and Oceania are similar to 2025 or slightly lower, per Hopper.
Claims vs evidence
“Thanksgiving flights cost 31% more in 2026”
Hopper's own release confirms $402, up 31% (+$95). Official BLS airfare CPI is up 22.4% y/y, so the direction is solid, though Hopper measures cheaper available fares, not tickets sold.
True“Holiday airfares are at a 10-year high”
Hopper says so for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. Its own past releases show $268–$307 for Thanksgiving in 2023–2025, but methods changed between years, so we cannot check the full decade independently.
Partly true“Jet fuel and the Iran conflict are driving fares”
Jet fuel rose 63% from February to March 2026 and was 84% higher y/y in August. Airfare CPI accelerated from 7% to 15–27% after 28 February. Spirit's exit and pricing power also contribute.
Partly true“Thanksgiving hotels are also much pricier”
Hopper says domestic Thanksgiving hotel rates are roughly flat at $170 a night. It is Christmas hotels that are up 18% to $197.
False“The cheapest days are Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday and Cyber Monday”
Thanksgiving Day ($371) and the Monday after (≈$350) are cheap, but the cheapest departure is Monday 23 November ($370) and Black Friday returns are mid-priced ($420).
Partly true“Fares will drop if you wait”
Google's data show the Thanksgiving low point about 34 days out (21–57 days). After early November, prices typically rise. Hopper says book before Halloween.
FalseFrequently asked questions
How much are Thanksgiving flights in 2026?
Hopper puts the average domestic round trip for Thanksgiving 2026 at $402, up 31% from about $307 in 2025. That figure reflects the cheaper end of fares available in September, so many tickets will cost more. Returning on Sunday 29 November averages about $604.
Why are flights so expensive right now?
Mainly jet fuel. US Gulf Coast jet fuel was $3.72 a gallon in August 2026, 84% above a year earlier, after the Iran conflict lifted oil prices. IATA says fuel is now over 31% of airline costs. Spirit Airlines' May shutdown and steady demand also help keep fares high.
What is the cheapest day to fly for Thanksgiving 2026?
Per Hopper, departing Monday 23 November (about $370) or on Thanksgiving Day (about $371) is cheapest. For the return, the Monday or Tuesday after Thanksgiving averages about $350, against roughly $604 for Sunday 29 November.
Is it too late to book Thanksgiving flights?
Not yet, as of 23 October 2026. Google Flights data show the cheapest Thanksgiving fares are usually 21 to 57 days before departure, lowest at about 34 days. For a 25 November departure, that window closes around 4 November. Hopper advises booking before Halloween.
How much are Christmas flights in 2026?
Hopper says the average domestic Christmas round trip is $452 in 2026, up 23% (+$85) from 2025. Departing the Monday or Tuesday before Christmas is cheapest at about $440, while returning after 2 January costs more than $560.
Will airfares go down in 2027?
Possibly, if oil eases. EIA forecasts Brent crude falling from $114 a barrel in September 2026 to an average of $84 in 2027, and wholesale jet fuel from $3.55 a gallon in 2026 to $2.97. That is a forecast, and American Airlines says it will slow 2027 growth because of fuel.
How much more will a family of four pay for Thanksgiving flights?
About $380 more than last year at Hopper's averages: 4 × ($402 − $307). A family returning on Sunday 29 November at about $604 each would pay around $2,416, while a Monday or Tuesday return at about $350 each costs roughly $1,400.
How much has airfare inflation risen in 2026?
The BLS consumer price index for airline fares was up 22.4% in September 2026 compared with September 2025, against 3.7% for overall CPI. It peaked at 26.7% year on year in May 2026, by our calculation from the index.
How we built this analysis
- Holiday fare and hotel figures come directly from Hopper's 2026 Holiday Travel Index (25 Sep 2026) and its 2023 and 2024 outlooks. The 2025 Thanksgiving baseline ($307) is implied by Hopper's stated +$95 change: $402 − $95 = $307; Christmas 2025 = $452 − $85 = $367.
- CPI year-on-year changes are KalQLater calculations from the BLS CPI-U Airline fares index (CUUR0000SETG01, not seasonally adjusted) via FRED, e.g. September: 315.948 ÷ 258.027 − 1 = 22.4%. October 2025 has no published value.
- Jet fuel changes use EIA's US Gulf Coast kerosene-type jet fuel monthly spot series (MJFUELUSGULF) via FRED: August 2026 $3.724 ÷ August 2025 $2.024 − 1 = 84.0%; February to March 2026: $3.697 ÷ $2.262 − 1 = 63.4%.
- Fuel per passenger: from American Airlines' Q3 2026 press release, fuel expense ÷ enplanements ($4,635m ÷ 58.143m = $79.72; $2,767m ÷ 58.474m = $47.32). Price-only effect: 1,204m gallons × ($3.85 − $2.37) = $1,782m ÷ 58.143m = $30.65 per enplanement; × 2 for a nonstop round trip ≈ $61. Fuel share of opex: $4,635m ÷ $16,220m = 28.6%; $2,767m ÷ $13,540m = 20.4%.
- Family-of-four cost: 4 × fare per person for each scenario; the 2025 comparison is 4 × ($402 − $307) = $380. Sunday vs Monday/Tuesday saving: 4 × $250 = $1,000 (Hopper's 'up to $250').
- Booking window end date: 25 November 2026 minus 21 days = 4 November 2026; minus 34 days = 22 October 2026.
Limitations
Hopper's averages reflect the 10th percentile of fares available to book in a September week, not the average ticket actually purchased, and its method has changed between years, so the 2023–2026 comparison is approximate. Fares change daily; actual Thanksgiving prices may be higher or lower. Our fuel-per-passenger estimate uses one airline's system-wide data, including long-haul international flights, and spot jet fuel prices differ from what airlines pay after hedging and delivery. AAA's 2026 Thanksgiving travel forecast had not been published as of 23 October 2026, and BTS's Q3 2026 fare data are due around 8 January 2027.
