Gratuity is a lump sum an employer pays when employment ends, as a reward for long service. In the UAE it is called the end-of-service benefit. In India it is a statutory benefit under the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972, now the Code on Social Security, 2020.
On the law minimum, Oman pays the most for service since July 2023: one month of basic wage for every year. Bahrain and the UAE pay the same 3.5 months for the first five years and one month a year after, but the UAE caps the total at 24 months. Saudi Arabia pays 0.5 then 1 month a year with no cap, Kuwait 15 days then a month capped at 18 months, and Qatar 21 days a year with no cap. Wage definitions differ: Saudi Arabia and Kuwait include fixed allowances, the others use basic.
Only Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Saudi Arabia pays nothing under 2 years, one third at 2–5 years and two thirds at 5–10 years. Kuwait pays nothing under 3 years, half at 3–5 years and two thirds at 5–10 years. The UAE, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain do not reduce gratuity for resignation.
On the same basic salary, the UAE pays more: 21 days per year (0.70 months) for years 1–5 and 30 days (1 month) after that, against India's 15 ÷ 26 (0.58 months) per year. But the UAE caps the total at 24 months of basic, India at ₹20 lakh, and the UAE requires 1 year of service against India's 5 for permanent staff.
No. In the UAE it uses basic salary only. In India it uses basic + dearness allowance, although under the Labour Codes allowances above 50% of total pay are added back.
